New Year honours list highlights philanthropy, social enterprise

Philanthropy, charitable services and social enterprise feature in Gordon Brown’s first New Year honours list.  Highlights include a CBE for philanthropist John Studzinski for “services to the arts and to charity”, and an MBE for Robert Key, executive director of the Elton Johns AIDS Foundation UK. 

An OBE was awarded to Penelope Newman, chief executive of Cafédirect, for “services to ethical business”, and to Katherine Welch, chief executive of Acumen Community Enterprise Development Trust, for “services to social enterprise in the north-east”.

A number of charity heads also received honours. Fiona Reynolds, director-general of the National Trust, was awarded a DBE.   Other awards included a CBE for Mark Goldring, chief executive officer of Voluntary Services Overseas, and an OBE for Dr David Barnardo, vice-president and lately chair of Barnardo’s.
