Lloyds announces £1m programme for UK social entrepreneurs

News (UK)

This year 154 social entrepreneurs from across the UK will receive grants and training from the School for Social Entrepreneurs, as part of the Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneurs Programme, worth over £1m annually, Lloyds Banking Group announced in September.

Each winner will receive training at one of the eight Schools for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) in the UK. New enterprises, in the start-up category, comprise 88% of winners. They will also receive grants of £4,000. Existing social enterprises, in the scale-up category, make up the remaining 12% and will each receive £15,000.

This year’s winners were chosen from 725 applicants after selection panels held up and down the country. Winners selected include a company offering affordable recycled carpeting to those on low-incomes, and an initiative encouraging entrepreneurialism in schools.

Paul Turner, communities and sustainable business director at Lloyds Banking Group, said: “We are delighted to be supporting UK social enterprises with the Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneurs Programme. We recognise that if we aspire to be the best bank for our customers we must also be the best bank for our communities.”

Over the next five years the programme aims to help 750 social entrepreneurs generate up to 2,500 jobs with a value of £11m.
