The third sector should work more closely with the state and with business to endure the economic downturn, says Stuart Etherington.

Etherington, chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), said that the impact of the credit crunch across government and civil society shows that the lessons of the crisis are not confined to the financial sector.

He was speaking at an event to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Sheffield Hall University’s Centre for Voluntary Sector Research (CVSR).

“These risks were not borne solely by City traders, but by all of us. Therefore we need to find solutions that work across this broader landscape: a tripartite deal encompassing the state, market and civil society,” he said.
