Barclays Wealth identifies six philanthropist ‘types’

News

Six ‘types’ of philanthropist are identified by Barclays Wealth in a new study of the shifting attitudes of today’s wealthy that highlights some of the key motivations behind their giving.

Philanthropology: The Evolution of Giving, reveals the six typologies as:

  • privileged youth
  • eco givers
  • altruistic entrepreneurs
  • reactive donors
  • cultured inheritors
  • professional philanthropists

Emma Turner, director of philanthropy at Barclays Wealth, told Philanthropy UK, “By identifying these typologies of giver, we felt we could help the sector recognise what drives different people to give and the type of causes they might also be more inclined to support.”

The findings explain how factors such as age, source of wealth, religious or political beliefs are influencing the ways in which high net worth individuals give to charity, and impact their decisions for supporting certain causes.

Turner said the paper, based on fresh analysis of Barclays Wealth's Tomorrow's Philanthropist report, will be of use to a wide variety of readers: “For intermediaries, research like this can make the conversation easier as they have some idea of an individual’s ‘typology’.  For donors, it may allow them to feel more comfortable having a section to fit into, and for charities it may help them focus their fundraising efforts in a way that was harder to do before.”
